Art Therapy Intervention: Magazine Photo Collage
Magazine photo collage is Cool Art Therapy Intervention #10 and is really based on a medium more than a particular method. In art lingo, collage simply means "to glue," and is the assembling of different images or materials to create a new whole. It emerged as an artform in the early 20th century in the work of Picasso, Braque, and other artists, continuing through the present. One of the most famous photo collages and Pop Art classic, Just What Is It that Makes Today's Homes So Different, So Appealing, is a quintessential example from the art world of how found images from a variety of sources are used to generate something completely different than their original intent. Psych Central World of Psychology Wonders About, if There is Such a Thing, a Good Side to Depression?
10 Possibly Good Things About Having Depression by Therese J. Borchard... A snip from her actually quite playful list of what she considers the silver lining side of things. I like the idea because it is absurd...I mean, who dare ask such a bold question?
Reason #9. I have fascinating conversations with strangers.
Here’s how the majority of my first conversations/introductions go with people who I sit next to on the plane, train, or at my son’s soccer games:
“So what do you do?”
“I write a mental health blog.”
“Oh. That’s interesting. How did you get into that?”
“I had a major nervous breakdown and wanted to kill myself for about two years. So one day I told God that if I ever woke up and wanted to be alive that I would dedicate the rest of my life to helping people who are trapped in the Black Hole.
That morning came.
And you, what do you do?”

We Project Our Strengths
"Any situation that you find yourself in, is an outward reflection of your inner state of beingness."
-- El Morya
OUR WORLD MIRRORS WHO WE ARE BACK TO US. When we get upset by something outside of us, our reaction shows us that we have an inner wound to be healed.
Just as we can be unconscious of our wounds, we can also be unconscious of our strengths. If you are really drawn to the positive qualities in another person, you are being invited to own those same qualities in yourself.
"The people we are in relationship with are always a mirror, reflecting our own beliefs, and simultaneously we are mirrors reflecting their beliefs. So relationship is one of the most powerful tools for growth... if we look honestly at our relationships we can see so much about how we have created them."
